A Letter to the Membership
of Serrra LL and Sunnyvale Southern
Little League Families -
It seems like we just wrapped up the 2016 Little League Season, but
2017 is on the horizon. With the new year, comes an exciting announcement
regarding Little League Baseball in Sunnyvale , Los Altos and Cupertino . After
more than 50 years operating as independent leagues, Serra Little League and
Sunnyvale Southern Little League are merging to form the new Sunnyvale Little League!
Our new league will begin
play in the spring of 2017 and will serve under the former boundaries that used
to make up Serra and Southern's boundaries, which cover most of west Sunnyvale
, and parts of north Cupertino and east Los Altos .
The Board of
Directors for both former leagues entered into discussions about a merge last
year, and after months of planning, Little League Baseball Incorporated
approved the merge on December 2nd. We have been holding the announcement until
we had this approval in order to ensure that registration could be opened for
all under our new league. This email is also intended to announce that
registration for the 2017 Sunnyvale Little League Season is
officially OPEN.
Representatives from both former leagues have
joined forces to create a new combined board, and have been working together
for a couple months. One major benefit of this combined board, is that we've
been able to adopt the best processes from both former leagues to form what we
believe is the best league in the South Bay.
In anticipation of the
question we expect to be asked the most, the decision to merge leagues was
necessitated by the decline in participant numbers over the past few years.
Little League Baseball is in competition with other competing baseball leagues,
as well as other youth sports. As families have more youth sport options,
Little League Baseball has suffered. In order to maintain a league that offers
appropriate development and competitive opportunities for our participants, we
need to maintain a healthy league membership.
There is still much work
to be done before we throw out the first pitch on Opening Day in March, so some
details of the league are still being worked out. Rest assured that the new
Board is working hard to position our league with our youth participants' best
interests in mind. Little League has been a prominent part of our community for
over 50 years, and we believe that we have an obligation to maintain some of
the heritage that Serra and Southern helped establish here in the South Bay
.
We are extremely excited to get the 2017 season underway, which starts
