The 2024 postseason begins with
a bang for SVLL
The 2024 postseason has been a busy one for
Sunnyvale Little League teams. The postseason is our league's opportunity to
field teams in five age specific divisions, including Juniors (13-14
year-olds), Intermediate 50/70 (13 year-olds), 12/11/10 year-olds, 11/10/9
year-olds and 10/9/8 year-olds. Each team participates in the District 44
Tournament, which pegs our teams with the other 9 leagues that make up
California District 44.
If a team wins the district tournament, they
advance to the Section 5 tournament. The tournament ladder then includes the
State Tournament, the Western Region Tournament and then ultimately the Little
League World Series. So each team needs to win 4 tournaments to earn the right
to participate in the Little League World Series. For our two youngest age
group teams (11/10/9 year-olds & 10/9/8 year-olds), the ladder ends with
the State Tournament.
Our 2021 Intermediate 50/70 All Star team won the
State Tournament, but due to COVID, Little League elected to end all
tournaments at the State level that year. In 2022, that same group of players
repeated as State Champions and came within two wins of advancing to the Little
League World Series, eventually falling to Southern California in the
tournament semi-finals.
This year, three of the five teams we field
were crowned District 44 Champions. The Intermediate 50/70s, the 11/10/9
year-olds and the 10/9/8 year-olds all won the District 44 Championships.
The Intermediate 50/70 All Stars made quick work of the two opposing
leagues, Cupertino and Briarwood/El Camino in the district tournament.
The 11/10/9 year-old All Stars won all 6 games played. Seven leagues
from District 44 participated, which started with two pools of 3 and 4 teams
respectively. Sunnyvale went 3-0 in pool play which was capped by a tight 4-3
victory over Santa Clara Westside LL. The "11s" then defeated Briarwood/El
Camino LL, Los Altos LL and Campbell LL in the double-elimination bracket.
The team combined to out-score their opponents in their 6 wins 58-15.
The closest margin of victory in the bracket round was 7 runs.
The
10/9/8 year-old All Stars also were a perfect 6-0, including a 3-0 record in
pool play and a perfect 3-0 in bracket play. They were able to win close 4-3
decisions over Los Altos LL and Campbell LL in the pool round. They would beat
Los Altos 6-4 in the tournament semi-final, before winning by a comfortable
10-4 margin in the championship game.
The "10s" were powered by a
strong pool of pitching that limited their opponents to 3.1 runs per game.
All three teams advance to the Section 5 tournament. As of this
publication the Intermediates advanced to the Championship game against Salinas
Atlantic LL.
The Section 5 tournament for the 11s is being hosted by
Aptos LL from July 11-17. The Section 5 tournament for the 10s will be hosted
by our league, with all games being played at Serra Park from July 11-17.
