Intermediates take Section 5 Crown

The Sunnyvale Little League All Stars took another step
toward the Little League World Series on Wednesday night when the Intermediate
Division All Stars beat Los Gatos Little League 12-3 at Quimby Oak Middle
School in San Jose to capture the California Section 5 title.
The team
comprised of 13-year-olds opened the Section tournament with an impressive 12-0
victory over Santa Teresa Little League from District 59. They would then
advance in the winner's bracket with a 1-0 victory over Los Gatos Little League
from District 12.
This would not be the last time the team face Los
Gatos. By virtue of their first two wins, Sunnyvale vaulted into the
Championship game on July 1st. Los Gatos fought their way out of the
elimination bracket to reach the Championship but they would need to beat
Sunnyvale twice to do so.
The team from the Cats-ville scratched out a
6-3 win on Tuesday to force a winner-take-all rematch on Wednesday night. The
finale would head to the 5th inning with Sunnyvale holding a 5-2 lead heading
into the 5th inning.
Los Gatos would pull to within two runs when they
scratched out a run in the top of the 5th, but Sunnyvale would score 7 times in
the bottom of the frame to seal the victory.
The team now advances to
the Northern California State Tournament, which begins on Saturday, July 5th at
Johnson-Springville Park in Rocklin California. Sunnyvale will square off with
representatives from 5 of the 6 other sections in the state.
If they
can win at states, they would advance to the Western Region Tournament, which
will be played in Nogales, Arizona. That is the final step before the
Intermediate Little League World Series, which is played in Livermore,
California.
