The Batter
- Fair and Foul Batted Balls [2.00, "Fair Ball" and
"Foul Ball"]
- A ball is unchangeably Fair when one of the
following occurs:
- It hits a base (first, second, or third,
but not home plate or the pitching rubber) It hits any fielder, runner, or
umpire while it is in fair territory
- Remember that the position of the ball, not
the fielder, is what counts
- it is in fair territory
- It goes over a fence in fair territory
- It hits the ground or a fence for the first
time beyond first or third base in fair territory
- After hitting the ground, it bounces over
any part of third or first base, or past one of those bases in fair
territory
- It settles on the ground in fair
territory
- "Fair territory" includes the foul lines and home
plate
- A ball is unchangeably Foul when one of the
following occurs:
- It strikes any foreign object in foul
territory, including the backstop, a fence, or anything attached to the fence;
a bat, helmet, or similar object, a player, an umpire, or a coacher
- After hitting the ground, it goes past
first or third base in foul territory
- It hits the ground for the first time in
foul territory beyond first or third base
- It settles on the ground in foul
territory
- There are "foreign objects" in foul
territory but not in fair territory
- Example #1: Batter tops ball. His helmet
falls off and ball hits it in foul territory, then bounces fair and settles.
Foul ball
- Example #2: Batter tops ball. His helmet
falls off and ball hits it in fair territory, then bounces foul and settles.
