Guide to Opening
Day
Saturday, March 5th marks the beginning of Sunnyvale
Little League's 65th season. We celebrate the start of the new season with our
Opening Day ceremony, which will be held at Serra Park, starting promptly at
9:00am.
Here are some tips on how to enjoy the day, as it will be
filled with micro-events that new families to our league may be unfamiliar
with:
Start the day early
Opening Day
ceremonies will begin at 9:00am, but you'll want to arrive around 8:40am or
earlier. There's lots of parking on the streets surrounding the park, but if
you have a little one in tow, you may need to do a little walking to get to
Serra 1 (this is the main field by the snack shack building).
Your
little leaguer should be dressed in their full team uniform. Players will
assemble in the outfield area with their teammates, as we introduce each team
as a group (hint: great photo opportunity). You don't want to be late.
Bring your camera
Speaking of photo
opps. There's a lot going on, so taking lots of pictures is a must. Keep in
mind that we provide a yearbook each year, which is full of photos that are
taken by you and other parents. Make that keepsake great by providing the
yearbook team with lots of great pictures to choose from. Candid photos are the
best, but hammy group shots are great too!
The
ceremony
The actual ceremony typically runs about an hour. We
use this opportunity to introduce our teams, umpires, the board members who
help keep the league running and local dignitaries. This year, we'll get a
chance to honor our 2021 Intermediate All Star Team which won District, Section
and State Championships, and our 2021 10/11/12 All Star team which won a
District Championship.
Grab lunch at the
ballpark
After a two year absence, the snack shacks will be
open once again. This year, we'll also be offering BBQ lunches from Zuc's
Frontyard BBQ. Be sure to pre-order your lunch in order to guarantee a meal.
We'll have a limited number of lunches available for purchase on Opening Day,
but insure you'll get to partake in the delicious BBQ by pre-ordering. Here are
some details on pre-ordering.
The snack shack will have plenty of regular treats and drinks, although we will
not have the grill running on Opening Day (because there will be BBQ!)
Catch a game or two or three
We'll
have a full slate of games at both Serra Park and De Anza Park on Opening Day.
Be sure to catch as many games as possible. Cheer on our teams. We're excited
to welcome all out newest little leaguers, especially our T-Ball and Challenger
players. Be sure to catch an inning or two of their games and welcome them with
lots of cheering.
A note on Opening Day Games: If there are odd
numbers of teams, there is the possibility that your child's team will not play
on Opening Day. We try to recruit opponents from neighboring leagues to help
avoid that, but it's an unfortunate possibility. If your child's team isn't
playing, they should still attend Opening Day ceremonies and partake in the
pomp and circumstance that is Opening Day.
We are all
volunteers
If you happen to be at the fields for the last games
of the day, we ask everyone to pitch in and help with cleanup. Keep in mind
that many volunteers have been at the field since 7:00am to setup, so we ask
that families help with cleanup. This simply means putting tables, pop-up shade
and banners away.
If you think your kids will be tired after a hard
day of celebrating, just wait until to you see the board members who have been
working tirelessly to make this season a reality.
If you have any
questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to any board member.
They'll be mulling around in their black league BOD shirts.
We can't
wait to see everyone as we get the 2022 season started. Play Ball!
